New Delhi, May 4 (IANS) In a surprising turn of events, RBI / MPC made an intermeeting decision to hike repo rate by 40 bps and CRR by 50 bps. Though since the April policy market has been pricing for a faster normalisation (interest rate swaps had been factoring in front loaded normalisation and cumulative hikes of 275 bps over 2 years), almost no one at all was prepared for an intermeeting action.
French President Emmanuel Macron clinched another five-year term in the Elysee Palace, becoming the third politician to achieve this feat. His victory also bought sighs of relief, from Brussels to Washington. Macron beat out far-right nationalist Marine Le Pen in the presidential elections, a contest that risked shattering the Western alliance against Russia, and jeopardising the very survival of the European Union (EU).
The week that ended on April 29 was full of both sided sharp moves. The week began with an expected fall, rose the next day, fell the next day and kept on alternating between gains and losses all through the week. At the end of the week, it had lost on three of the five days. What was eventful was the fact that Friday was the day of reversal where markets gained initially and in the last hour just cracked.
End of the Cold War marked the beginning of an era of covert offensives, externally instigated insurgencies and proxy wars. Interestingly, even a military intrusion like the one ordered by President Putin in Ukraine two months ago, was couched in the description of an 'army operation compelled by Russia's security concerns' -- the fact of world opinion going totally against a one sided 'open war' was perhaps being acknowledged here.

In Persian there is an old proverb: "Amad'an, nashist'am, ghuft'am, barkhas'tam'", meaning "they came, they sat, they talked and then dispersed". It actually means to say that nothing substantial was achieved by the visit or the talks. The same could be said about UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson's recent visit to India, after his two previous trips scheduled last year were cancelled due to Covid-19 pandemic.

In a democratic dispensation a citizen lives in three dimensions - personal, socio-cultural and political. Religion, mode of worship, food, health and family care - all fall in the personal domain and the democratic state grants an almost total freedom of choice there.
It was April 2021 when I was also found to be infected with Covid, after a first dose of vaccine. My oxygen levels were fluctuating and fever was now coming down. It was a panic situation for me as well as my family. I dont know for how many hours I had to lie on my stomach to bring back my oxygen levels and how many medicines I had to take to be alive. I dont remember how many times I drank the Ayush Kadha and had everything that the doctors suggested.

The April 7 ruling of the Supreme Court of Pakistan delegitimising the Deputy Speaker's action of annulling the No Confidence Motion tabled in the National Assembly by the combined opposition and the dramatic course of events that followed in the House on April 9 culminating in the ouster of Prime Minister Imran Khan through a midnight voting on that motion and the subsequent election of leader of the opposition Shehbaz Sharif as the new Prime Minister -- all significantly mark the emergence of a new geopolitical profile of Pakistan.
Imran Khan was finally booted out of power on the early morning hours of April 10. This is the first time in the political history of Pakistan that a sitting prime minister has been unseated through a vote of no confidence. This illustrates how deeply the Pakistani political and military establishment is divided. The fundamental cause for this division is two folds - one reason for the above mentioned division is the unstoppable downward spiral of Pakistan's economy and the other is the denial of rights of oppressed nations living under the iron clad of the federation of Pakistan.
Los Angeles, April 13 (IANS) NASA's Hubble Space Telescope has confirmed the largest comet nucleus ever seen by astronomers, the agency has said.
It seems as if the Russia-Ukraine war has rendered the seminal work by Samuel Huntington "The Clash of Civilizations", as completely wrong. As the narrative painted by him 30 years earlier, and which occupied the central place in the world politics particularly by the western liberals has not happened. Instead of a clash of the civilizations, it is now a clash within the civilization i.e. white, European and Orthodox Christians fighting amongst them.
